Imphal, October 08 2024:
Several National People's Party (NPP) MLAs are expected to skip the state executive committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, amid ongoing uncertainty over the party's alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
This development came after the recent national executive meeting held in Guwahati, which failed to arrive at a consensus on whether to continue supporting the BJP amid the ongoing crisis in the state.
The state executive meeting has been convened on October 9 through a notification issued by NPP state secretary Kh Shyam, with the approval of president N Kayisii on October 5 .
The notification was issued as a follow-up to the Guwahati national executive chaired by NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
However, sources indicate that at least five of the seven NPP MLAs may not attend the meeting, although the specific names of those likely to be absent have not been disclosed.
NPP, an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre, remains divided on the future of the alliance in the state.
While some MLAs are contemplating withdrawing support from the BJP, others favour continuing the partnership.
Adding to the complexity, a second national executive meeting scheduled for October 5 in New Delhi was postponed indefinitely, leaving party members in limbo.
Generally, a state executive committee of a national political party adheres to the decisions made by the national executive committee or the party's president.
However, some MLAs have expressed concern that the state executive committee may take an independent stance that could conflict with the national executive's decisions.
The likelihood of the absence of key MLAs from Wednesday's meeting raises questions about the internal dynamics of the NPP and its future political strategy in the state.
