Imphal, October 18 2024:
Against the backdrop of the long-pending rehabilitation and resettlement package, Mapithel Dam Affected Headmen, Chiefs and Elders' Organization (MDAHCEO) has warned of launching intense agitation, including dismantling of the dam, if the compensation owed to the affected villagers is not released within short notice.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Friday, MDAHCEO chairman M Ngaranmi served an ultimatum to the government to either pay the compensation or face possible targeting of the dam.
He cautioned that the affected villagers would be compelled to dismantle the dam in case the government continues to ignore urgent need for releasing the pending rehabilitation & resettlement compensation at the earliest.
He contended that while construction of the dam commenced in 1972 and was completed in December 2020, those displaced from their home and hearth due to the project continue to be deprived of their rightful compensation.
According to Ngaranmi, prior to initiation of the dam project, the government had assured the affected villagers of various benefits and opportunities.
"However, we have npt received the compensation yet, let alone other benefits," he said, adding that all their properties and farmlands have been submerged resulting in loss of income source.
Ngaranmi further Said that they had also approached the department concerned to release fingerlings in the dam water as source of livelihood for the affected people.
Instead of considering the proposal, the fisheries director asked the villagers to buy the fingerlings themselves, he said while decrying such irresponsible and indifferent responses.
He also demanded the government to translate into action the 18-point memorandum submitted to the water resources department back in 2020 at the earliest.
