The initiative by the state government to preserve hillocks is not against any community or individual but for the sake of the future generations, said forest & environment minister Thongam Biswajit.
The directorate of environment and climate change in collaboration with Iputhou Koirou Lakpa Committee organised a plantation drive of Uningthou saplings at Iputhou Koiroulakpa in Thongju on Friday morning.

Biswajit continued that Uningthou, the state tree, holds great significance.
However, it is gradually declining due to lack of conservation efforts.
As such, the forest department is planning to plant 40,000 Uningthou saplings during this year, he informed.
Emphasising the importance of conserving the environment, he mentioned the initiative taken up by the state for conserving small hillocks in the valley area.
The initiative is purely in the interest of future generations and not against any community or individual, he maintained.
Responding to questions from the media on the issues faced in paying the electricity bills for prepaid meters through mobile applications amid the lack of adequate vending machines, the minister assured to look into the matter at the earliest including increasing the number of centres.
He also informed that efforts are being taken up to install new advanced electric smart meters in place of the old prepaid meters.
