NPP reviews party's alliance with BJP

Imphal, October 23 2024: A four-member national committee team of National People's Party (NPP) arrived here on Wednesday to assess the political situation and gauge the public's mood regarding the party's position in the BJP-led coalition government.

The team is visiting the state as the ongoing crisis, which has persisted without resolution for 18 months, triggered debate among NPP members regarding their alliance with the BJP.

The visiting delegation includes NPP national general secretary (organisation) James Sangma, Kerala state president KT Thomas, Youth Front national president Nickey Nongkhlaw, and national general secretary Abhay Kashyap.

On arrival, the team held a series of meetings with the party's legislators and organisation leaders at Hotel Classic Grande, Chingmeirong.

Their first meeting was with former deputy chief minister and NPP national vice-president Yumnam Joykumar, followed by other functionaries.

During the two-hour discussion, they deliberated on the prevailing situation in the state, public's perception of political parties, potential impact on upcoming state assembly elections, and NPP's preparation for the elections.

An NPP MLA, who attended the meeting, informed The People's Chronicle that out of the party's seven MLAs, Kh Loken (Wangoi), O Nalini (Oinam), Md Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao), M Rameshwar (Kakching), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong) were present.

The MLA revealed that since party members had already shared their opinions on the alliance with the BJP during an earlier meeting in Guwahati, there was no significant discussion on the matter in Wednesday's meeting.

Instead, the discussions focused on strengthening the party, fielding more candidates in future elections, and other organisational matters.

However, differing opinions regarding the BJP alliance were noted.

On Thursday, the national committee members are scheduled to meet around 10 apolitical individuals from the intellectual community, representing various communities, to discuss the ongoing crisis and the role political parties can play in finding a resolution.

Additionally, the delegation will engage with block-level leaders to gain insights into grassroots perspectives on the alliance and the crisis.

According to a source, the national committee will present its assessment report in the upcoming NPP national executive meeting, expected in two weeks.

Based on this assessment, the party is likely to make a final decision regarding its alliance with the BJP in the state.
