The 5th North East Chapter Conference (NEC-CON) 2024 of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) commenced on Saturday at Hotel Classic Grande, Imphal, with a strong focus on the impact of alcohol consumption and obesity on liver health.
The two-day conference brings together over 90 gas-tro and liver specialists from across the northeast region, as well as faculty members from AIIMS New Delhi, AIG Hospital Hyderabad, and Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai.
The conference, the first of its kind held in Imphal, will conclude on Sunday.
ILDS managing director and organising secretary of the conference, Dr N Surajkumar highlighted the widespread use of alcohol in the state, observing its prevalence across all social occasions and the associated rise in liver disease cases.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Surajkumar stated that alcohol consumption has become an integral part of life here, from birth ceremonies to funerals, contributing to a high rate of liver disorders.
Alongside alcohol, he cited the rising popularity of fast foods and lack of physical activity as contributing factors to obesity and fatty liver disease in the state.
He expressed hope that the conference would yield valuable insights and facilitate the sharing of best practices among specialists to improve treatment outcomes for gastro and liver diseases.
A Live Endoscopy Conference is also scheduled to take place at ILDS Imphal, Kwakeithel, as part of the event, he added.
AIIMS New Delhi, head of gastroenterology department, professor Pramod Garg further emphasised the risks associated with substance abuse, particularly among young people, which can lead to severe issues in the liver, pancreas, heart, and brain.
He urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to mitigate these health risks.
