In recognition of his immense contributions to the Tangkhul society, reverend Dr Tuisem A Shishak was honoured with the AC Kanmi Foundation's Award of Excellence for the year 2024 .
On behalf of the AC Kanmi Foundation, Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) president Sword Vashum handed over the award to reverend Dr Shishak during a ceremony held at UBC Church, Phungreitang in Ukhrul town on Friday.
Reverend Dr Shishak reportedly flew down from New Delhi to receive the award which carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
In his acceptance speech, 93-year-old Dr Shishak stated that he was unaware of the award, and expressed that he was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had been chosen for the first year of the award.
"I give my thanks to the AC Kanmi Foundation for recognising my works".
He reflected on the challenges facing the contemporary Tangkhul society, and particularly observed the lack of unity and brotherly bonds within the community.
"In Christ, we are one, remember this," he reminded and urged the gathering to embody this message both physically and spiritually.
Reverend Dr Shishak also pointed out the issue of Biblical illiteracy among the Tangkhuls, despite the community boasting a rich history of Christianity spanning 125 years and called on ordained reverends to create spiritual classrooms to educate the community.
TNL president Vashum praised reverend Dr Shishak as a prophetic voice for the Tangkhuls.
"You truly deserve this.
You and only you deserve this award," Vashum remarked as he presented the award to Dr Shishak, stressing the impact of his contributions on the community over his lifetime.
Aran Chihui of the AC Kanmi Foundation elaborated that the award was instituted in honour of the legacy of his late father, AC Kanmi, from Khangkhui village.
He recounted his father's remarkable journey from a government enumerator to a respected Manipur Civil Service (MCS) officer, adding that he received eight promotions during the course of his 39-year career.
Chihui noted that although the current Tangkhul society may seem overshadowed by negativity, there are still positive contributions worth celebrating.
"It is with this perspective that the award seeks to recognise individuals who have made outstanding impacts in various fields within the Tangkhul community," he explained.
He also announced that this award will be presented annually, continuing to recognise individuals with a proven track record of excellence in diverse areas in the coming years.
