Constitution of India, roles of citizens dissected

Various organisations observed the Constitution Day at their respective offices and different locations on Saturday.
Speaking at the 73rd Constitution Day observance organised by Dalit Sahitya Academy at Manipur Press Club, Kakching MLA M Rameshwar highlighted the importance of the day stating that every individual and community needs to respect the rules, rights and responsibilities enshrined in the Constitution.
Stating that the Indian Constitution guarantees numerous benefits to the citizens and as such everyone should get acquainted with the Constitutional provisions so as to avail these benefits, he also opined that people should be more educated than the legislators so that capable representatives are elected to bring progress and development in the country.
The MLA also stressed that freedom of speech should be used properly.
The observance was also attended by Dalit Sahitya Academy national secretary Dr-Y Mendrakumar and social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram as presidium members.
In connection with the observance, Dhanamanjuri University organised a lecture programme on the topic 'India: The Mother of Democracy' at DM College of Arts multipurpose hall, with DM College of Arts principal Prof Ch Sheelaramani and DMC Science principal Dr M Bhubaneswari as the presidium members.
The observance lectures were delivered by DMU Economics associate professor Dr N Achouba on the topic 'Arthashastra', Philosophy head Dr Sarat on 'Vedanta and Upanishads', Sociology head Dr Th Umavati Devi on 'Dharma and Loktantra' and Political Science assistant professor Dr Arambam Noni on 'Pluralism and Democracy: The Northeast Experience'.
Royal Academy of Law (RAL), Oinam in collaboration with Adhivakta Parishad Manipur organised National Law Day at its seminar hall with Manipur Human Rights Commission former chairperson Khaidem Mani, Parishad president and RAL former principal Irengbam Jugeshor and principal Eliza Meishnam as presidium members.
Senior advocate Irom Lalit talked on 'Economic justice, social justice and political justice' and Human Rights Alert director Babloo Loitongbam on 'Indian Constitutions 7 Universal Human Right' as resource persons.
The Preamble of the Indian Constitution was also read out as a part of the observance.
Political science and education department of Shree Shree Gourgobind Girls' College, Khurai also observed Constitution Day which was attended by College principal Dr K Jaboshakhi Devi, Education head Dr Sapam Neelima Devi, Anthropology head Dr Shashikumari Devi and vice principal Dr H Anita Devi as presidium members.
Meanwhile, Manipur People's Democratic Front (MPDF) secretary Sapam Samungou wished the people on the occasion of 73rd national constitution day.
Briefing the media at Manipur Press Club, he said that good governance would be impossible if people do not understand constitution, which is above everything else.
Seva Bharti Manipur also observed Constitution Day at its Nagamapal office, here, on Saturday.
Speaking as a guest of honour cum resource person, advocate Bishorjit emphasised the need for adhering to the true spirit of Indian Constitution, which took around 2 years in the making.
He then said that there are three pillars of the country- judiciary, executive and legislature, but the constitutional laws carry meaning only if they have the support of the people.
Urging the centre to consider the sentiments, situation, culture and customs of the northeast states while enacting laws concerning the region, the advocate also appealed to the public to carry out their fundamental duties instead of clamouring for their fundamental rights all the time.
In his speech as the chief guest, retired IAS BB Sharma detailed about the formation of the Constitution apart from referring to a bulletin from the book, 'Nikhil Hindu Manipuri Mahasabha, co-authored by Loitam Yaima Singh and Rajkumar Maipaksana, on the importance of a united India.
The Constitution is the one that decides the fate of the people, he said.
The observance was also attended by Seva Bharti Manipur president Brajakumar Sharma as president along with other members of the organisation.
