Storm wreaks havoc, snaps power lines

Imphal, April 21 2023: The heavy storm accompanied by light rain which hit many parts of the state on Thursday night wreaked havoc at many places, particularly in Noney, Churachandpur and Tengnoupal districts while high voltage transmission line at many places have been snapped.

According to a statement of Manipur State Power Company Limited deputy general manager S Sanjeet Singh, the storm snapped high voltage transmission line at many places but restoration work is going on at full swing.

The snapped transmission lines are 132kv Yurembam to Yaingangpokpi-II line, 132kv Rengpang to Jiribam line, 132kv Leimatak to Rengpang line, 33kv Napetpalli to Sagolmang/Saikul line, 33kv Napetpalli to Chingarel line, 33kv Yaingangpokpi to Napetpalli line, 33kv Jiribam to Shivapurikhan line, 33kv Yurembam to Noney line, 33kv Rengpang to Khoupum line and 33kv Iroisemba to Leimakhong (mini tower) line.

However, restoration work is underway in at full swing, the statement said, adding that power supply at affected areas could not be made till completion of restoration work.

Our Noney correspondent re-ported that the storm cut off electric lines at many places in Noney district and uprooted trees.

The storm blew away the GCI roofing of the building of Tengkonjang Government Higher Secondary School at Longmai Part-3.Two rooms of the school are also badly affected by the storm and furniture and classroom doors damaged.

School principal Gaichui Malangmei informed that normal classes could not be held on Friday due to the damage and urged authority concerned to repair the damages done by the storm so that JNV class-VI admission entrance test examination scheduled at the school later this month could be conducted.

Report has also been received that the storm which hit Churachandpur district at about 11.30pm on Thursday left a trail of destruction in many parts of the district.

The storm snapped tree branches at many places particularly near Peace Ground at Tuibuong and damaged electric poles at many places.

For the second time, the main building of Churachandpur Medical College (CMC), which was inaugurated by Union home minister on January 6, was hit by Thursday night's storm.

The storm blew away parts of the panel walls of the administrative block while panel walls of district hospital's New Block building forming a part of the CMC already ravaged by storm on April 17 had once again been blown off.

Some Aluminium roofs of the oxygen plant located nearby the CMC building have also been blown away.

A tree in the campus of the district hospital was also uprooted by the storm.

As the storm cut off electric lines at many places, power supply in Churachandpur district could not be restored till late Friday evening.

Reports of destruction have also trickled in from many areas of Churachandpur and its surrounding villages like Mata, Bible Hills, Bullian, Headquarters Veng.

Many villages in Henglep, Thanlon and Singhat subdivisions too were reportedly hit by the storm.

The storm also hit many houses in Tengnoupal district particularly at Lamlong Khunou where roofs of 13 houses including guest house, cultural hall and Church building have been blown away.

Some houses in Waksu village including the community hall and SSC school building were also hit by the storm.

In Bishnupur, the wind storm blew away most of the roofs of houses and caused damage to paddy field huts along with flattening the standing crops in Toubul and Khoijuman Kwashiphai area.
