Imphal, May 18 2024:
In accordance to the resolution taken by All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State on May Day, a mass campaign to exert pressure on the government for restoration of peace in the state among others begun on Saturday.
Speaking at the inaugural programme of the campaign held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Saturday; AITUC general secretary L Sotinkumar recalled that several resolutions were adopted on May Day in the presence of 64 representatives of unions, associations and federations.
The mass campaign has been launched to exert pressure on state and central governments for fulfilling various demands including restoration of peace in the state by bringing a political solution, increasing honorarium of fourth grade workers to 26k per month; providing rice at Rs 3 per kg and free rice, providing exact 100 days NREGS work with increment of Rs 100 per day to 600 per day, he informed.
The state government could have controlled the conflict within a short span of time, but failed to do so because of inaction and silence.
As such people are suffering today terribly, Sotinkumar lamented, while demanding restoration of peace in the state at the earliest possible.
He also pointed out that they have been demanding to deploy National Highway Protection Forces along the National Highways.
With the deployment of such forces, the issues along the national highway could be solved.
Several drivers and handymen have been killed and assaulted along the National Highways, yet the central government remained silent, he condemned.
If the government did not listen to their demands, preparations for launching 'Jail Bharo' protest is ready, he cautioned.
The launch function of the mass campaign was attended by Manipur Human Rights Commission former acting chairman advocate Khaidem Mani, political analyst Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma and MU professor Dr Chinglen Maisnam as dais members.
