Imphal, May 09 2024:
Unknown miscreants planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai Sapam Mill under Singjamei police station along Imphal-Moreh route on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
According to a police report, the police received a report of discovery of an IED on the side of the Imphal-Moreh road near Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai Sapam Mill around 1.30pm Thursday.
The bomb was planted right in front of the gate of one Sapam Romi (43) s/o (L) Ibobi.
A team of Manipur police bomb experts arrived at the site and safety retrieved the bomb around 4 am.
The bomb weighed around 1kg and was placed inside a can with shrapnel, and shielded with cellotape.
On the other hand, Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai Apunba Lup staged a sit-in protest in front of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai Sapam Mill on Thursday, condemning the bomb threat.
Speaking on the sidelines, Lup secretary Sapam Deepara-ni recounted that her brother Sapam David (41) s/o Jiten was rushed to JNIMS hospital following complaint of abdominal pain on Wednesday night.
They returned from the hospital around 1pm Thursday and were dropping off David to his house, when they spotted light emitting from a sprouted wire on the road.
They immediately poured water on the wire and extinguished the flame.
Upon checking, the wire was found to be around 20ft in length with the tip tied to a can wrapped with red colour cellotape, which was placed in front of Sapam Romi's residence.
As such, the police was immediately informed, who then, after taking up requisite security measures, safely removed the bomb.
Stating that the bomb might have exploded if they had not come back from the hospital at that time, she demanded the person(s) responsible to clarify the reason for planting the bomb.
She said that Sapam Romi is a simple e-rickshaw driver and urged all concerned not to repeat such acts in the future.
