Imphal, October 20 2022:
Vaiphei People's Council (VPC), Leilon Block chairman Chungmang Vaiphei has said that earlier CSOs and village chiefs were unable to prevent illegal poppy farming in the hill areas but the War against Drugs mission of the Biren government has made it possible.
Central Bureau of Communication, field office Senapati district organised a one- day integrated communication and outreach programme on Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, 8 Years of Seva Sushasan, Garib Kalyan and Vision 2047 at the local community hall of Leilon village in Senapati district on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Chungmang Vaiphei conceded that there was rampant practice of illegal poppy farming in the hill ar eas.
Chemicals used in the poppy farming were absorbed in the soil and seeped into water bodies, which further made the river water toxic for human consumption.
In the past, CSOs and village chiefs could not prevent the illegal practice.
However, after CM Biren launched the War on Drugs mission, the government has been able to stop such illegal practice and so, CSOs and village chiefs should extend full support to the government in enforcing the ban, he said.
CBC Senapati district field publicity officer Dr Waribam Urmila said that the outreach programme was organised with the objective to create awareness on various schemes and projects taken up by central and state governments among the people living in interior parts of the state.
It is to enhance their knowledge so that they could take benefits of the schemes and empower themselves, she said.
Among others, CC Higher Secondary School lecturer Dr S Kamminlun Vaiphei and Leilon Vaiphei village chief Khupneilun Vaiphei attended the programme.
