Koirengei clubs restrict operation of heavy vehicles

Imphal, May 24 2022: Citing poor condition of the Koirengei IVR leading to Sekmai and referring to loss of precious lives recently due to accidents, Koirengei Awang Apunba Club has restricted with immediate effect entry/operation of heavy vehicles until expansion and proper maintenance of the road stretch.

The resolution to restrict plying of heavy vehicles was adopted in a meeting convened by Apunba Club, which is a joint body of Awang Leikinthabi Modem Youth Association, Awang Wabagai Shinning Club, Nilakuthi Youth Club, Brighter Club Awang Potshangbam Khullen, Youth Development Club Awang Potsangbam Khunou, Tingri Youth Development Association.

Speaking to media persons at Awang Leikinthabi community hall on Tuesday, KYDC secretary Telem Romen recounted that many lives have been lost due to accidents on the said route as the IVR is narrow and ill-maintained.

After two people died when a loaded truck overturned on May 13, a person succumbed and another sustained critical injury when an unidentified vehicle hit them at Potsangbam Khullen Lamkhai (junction) on May 22 night, he said.

The secretary also reasoned that due to poor condition of the IVR compared to the high volume of vehicular movement the decision has been taken to prohibit heavy vehicles, especially inter-state good, from passing through the road.

The heavy vehicles should take the National Highway via Khonghampat, he suggested and cautioned that responsibility for any untoward incident due to defiance of the bodies' strictures should be borne by the driver and owner of the vehicles.

Romen also informed that a memorandum on the same will be submitted to the CM.

Joining the media briefing, Imphal West Up Adyakshya member Laishram Bobby Devi said that they had already placed a proposal to the CM for expansion of the road.

While waiting for the expansion, many have died and several other living their lives as disabled, she contended and deplored said that the vehicle involved in the May 22 accident could not be traced till now.

While appealing to the people for helping the family of the injured person, she also fully endorsed the restriction pul on heavy vehicles along the IVR.
