Directorate, institutions observe World Earth Day

Directorate of Environment and Climate Change observed World Earth Day 2024 under the theme of 'Planet vs Plastic' at its Porompat office on Monday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, DM University vice chancellor Prof N Rajmuhon noted that human beings are causing a lot of problems for the Mother Nature, and cautioned that failure to tread carefully will only bring more distress to inhabitants of planet Earth.
He also stressed the need for harmony and collaboration between science and spirituality to save the planet.
Recounting about origin and purpose of World Earth Day observance, he urged all for reducing the use of single-use plastic.
Several countries have introduced innovative ideas to replace plastic with other environment-friendly materials, pointed out the vice chancellor, while urging the people of the state to work together to save the planet.
Presiding over the function, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar emphasised the need to understand that all living beings will cease to exist in case of unrestrained exploitation of the natural environment and human activities continue to affect the ecosystems.
As long as the air and water are clean and safe, all living beings will be able safe and healthy.
However, the use of single use plastic and presence of micro and nano plastics in the air and water, are threatening the survival of humans and other living beings, he maintained, adding that the state government and the relevant authorities had introduced anti-plastic policy and took up steps related to plastic and waste management.
Apart from these, Green Education programme has been taken up for college students, the director informed and reminded that human beings will be able to survive as long as we save the planet and understand the role we play in this regard.
MAHUD commissioner M Joy, who attended as special guest, handed over plastic bottle banks to be installed at government colleges.
He also released various environmental educational materials on the occasion.
Meanwhile, under the sponsorship of Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi; Manipur Educational Development & Resource Association (MEDRA) organised Earth Day observance at SK Ideal High School, Ngairangbam.
In a release, MEDRA informed that planting of trees, painting competition and awareness session about harmful effects of plastic were the main highlights of the observance presided over by school headmaster T Babudhon Singh.
Sangai Trust Foundation also observed Earth Day-2024' at Thambalkhong Government Junior High School.
Observed under the theme Planet versus plastic', the event was attended by RIMS medicine department former HoD Dr S Bheigyapati Devi and Trust managing trustee Salam Prasant as presidium members.
Tree saplings were also planted as a part of the observance.
