Descendants propose King Marjit museum in Bangladesh

The seventh and eighth generation descendants of the then Manipur king Marjit, who stayed in Bangladesh during seven years devastation, settling in Tilokpur Ranibazar Kamalganj under Moulvi Bazar district, Bangladesh, continue to preserve the swords, shoes and costumes of the king.
A large pond referred to as Konung Pukhri is also in the area along the shrine of Ibudhou Pakhangba in existence since Marjit's stint in Bangladesh.
A team of United Committee Manipur (UCM) led by its president Joychan-dra Konthoujam met the descendants of King Marjit on Thursday, enquired their wishes and what they expect from the government of Manipur.
Speaking in this regard, Rk Surjit Singh, the seventh generation descendant of King Marjit, expressed desire to properly preserve items of the king in a museum-like facility in the area.
An official team had visited the place few years back requesting custody of the items under patronage of the government of Manipur in exchange for Rs one lakh, he recalled, while adding that the offer was declined as he firmly believed that the items are in their right place.
Rk Surjit also confided that he can allot land if the government of Manipur is willing to construct a museum to preserve the king's items.
In response, Joychandra assured to try to impress upon chief minister N Biren for construction of a museum in Bangladesh where the Marjit resided, to preserve the prized items and build a statue of Maharaj Gambhir Singh at his memorial site located at Manipuri Rajbari, Sylhet.
