Awareness on 'role of beekeeping in development' held

Imphal, November 18 2023: All Manipur Beekeeping Association (AMBA) organised a one-day awareness programme on "Role of Beekeeping in Shaping Development in Manipur' at Mongjam Mamang Leikai in Imphal East district on Saturday during which speakers elaborated on potential of beekeeping as a transformative force for sustainable agricultural practices and overall economic growth in the state.

In his address, AMBA president Th Joysana highlighted the rich biodiversity and agricultural landscape of the state while acknowledging the challenges posed due to unpredictable weather condition, soil degradation, and reduced crop yield.

He said that beekeeping is a sustainable solution to such challenges as it guarantees benefits for agriculture and broader economic development.

Even as the state grapples with the impact of unpredictable weather patterns and soil degradation, leading to diminished crop productivity, traditional farming methods, coupled with limited access to technology, contribute to these challenges.

Bees, as essential pollinators, provide a natural solution to enhance yields and promote soil health.

Beekeeping thus presents an opportunity for farmers to diversify income streams with minimal investment, he said.

AMBA secretary Dr Atom Sunil highlighted the association's role since its establishment in 1963, serving as a liaison between beekeepers and government initiatives and advocating tirelessly for the rights and welfare of genuine beekeepers.

Despite challenges in distributing schemes, AMBA ensures that benefits reach those actively contributing to apiculture, he said, adding that the association plays a crucial role in representing beekeepers' interests in policy formulation and organising skill development workshops.

Genuine beekeepers affiliated under AMBA gain access to invaluable resources and financial assistance.

The association offers individual membership at Rs 1,000 and society membership at Rs 5,000.These fees support AMBA's efforts to promote and protect beekeepers' interests, providing members with exclusive access to training sessions and workshops, the secretary pointed out while urging beekeepers to become part of the association.
