IBSD workshop explores NE's genomic resources

Imphal, February 08 2024:
Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal organised a workshop for exploring genomic resources of North Eastern Region for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources.
During the workshop, Prof Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, director IBSD, highlighted various initiatives of the institute for the development of bioresources while stating that genome sequencing of bioresources is important for proper authentication and characterization of germplasms.
Prof Pulok also informed that IBSD and NIBMG have collaborated on genome sequencing and exploration of genomic resources of the region.
As chief guest of the event, Prof N Lokendra Singh, vice chancellor Manipur University, appreciated the initiatives of IBSD for conducting such a workshop in Imphal.
He said that economic transformation is only possible through multidisciplinary R&D activities in academics/research institutes.
The vice chancellor also highlighted several initiatives of the central government for the implementation of quality research, while stressing the need for collaborative research between IBSD and Manipur University to promote bioresources.
Dr Sagar Sengupta, director NIBMG, highlighted various activities of the institute where IBSD can collaborate for the development of genomic resources of this region, adding that IBSD and NIBMG are collaborating on human genome project and INSACOG.
Dr Arindam Maitra, associate Professor NIBMG, emphasized that genome sequencing of NER resources is critical in the era of climate change/global warming.
Dr H Sunitibala Devi, IBSD scientist, highlighted various IBSD's initiatives for mass propagation and cultivation of Citrus sp to promote such bidresources in NER.
During the event, quality planting material of Citrus sp were distributed to farmers and representatives from different relief camps.
The programme was attended by scientists/scholars from IBSD, NIBMG and other institutions.
