Chothes decry delimitation move

Imphal, October 13 2008: Demanding an exclusive Autonomous District Council constituency for Chothe villages rather than grouping them with other villages, Chothe people staged a protest sitting against the delimitation exercise today.

Speaking to reporters at Ziontalang, chairman of the District Council Delimitation Committee Paul Khing alleged the delimitation exercise undertaken for conducting District Council election was partial and it deviated from the principle.

Contrary to the demand for creating a separate ADC constituency for Chothe villages of Chandel district, particularly those located within 10 kms radius, most of these villages have been put under the newly created 9-Khudei Khunou constituency while two other Chothe villages have been put under Aihang and Komlathabi constituencies, decried Paul Khing.

He further decried the act of putting Purum Chumbang under Aihang constituency which is located more than 10 kms away while rejecting the demand of the Chothes on the pretext that it was against delimitation rules.

Saying that memoranda on the committee's demand have been submitted to the Delimitation Committee Chairman, local MLA, DC and the SDO five times, Paul further conveyed that that various forms of agitation including bandh will be launched until their demand is met.

The committee further demanded that the newly created 9-Khudei Khunou constituency should be named 9-Purum constituency and the two Chothe villages put under other ADC constituencies should be grouped under 9-Purum constituency.

The protest sitting staged today at Ziontalang was attended by a large number of villagers including head men.

They put up placards which read as "Chothe want equal justice", "No DCC Khudei Khunou, rename it 9-Purum" etc.
