Imphal, April 08 2021: Demanding justice for Sanaton Athokpam, a large number of people blocked Imphal-Ukhrul road at many places today.

The bandh was enforced after people largely womenfolk carried out a torch rally yesterday night at around 7 .

The torch rally yesterday started from Lamlong bazar and proceeded towards JNIMS via Ayangpalli road, Porompat Chuthek, Checkon, Hatta and Minuthong.

At Minuthong police blocked the protesters and a commotion broke out.

The protesters then returned from Minuthong and ended the rally at Lamlong area.

It may be noted that the people of Khurai under the aegis of Justice For Sanaton Athokpam have been staging various forms of stir demanding impartial investigation into the death of the medical student.

Sanaton Athokpam was a 5th Semester MBBS student at RIMS.

He was found hanging with both his hands tied behind inside his room at a RIMS hostel on March 15.Since then, the Joint Action Committee (Justice For Sanaton Athokpam) has been demanding police to file an FIR and investigate the death.

The JAC has also been demanding suspension of RIMS Director and the Warden of the hostel Sanaton was staying at.

Today, the JAC members along with people of Khurai blocked the Imphal-Ukhrul road and restricted vehicular movements.

In a statement, M Loyalakpa, convenor of Justice For Sanaton Athokpam said the JAC along with people will continue to hold agitation until the truth behind the death is uncovered.

Police should file a First Information Report and investigate the case seriously, he said.
