Imphal, October 06: Effecting a change of guard, Maj Gen TS Handa handed over the reins of 57 Mountain Division to Maj Gen Shakti Gurung during a simple but impressive function at Leimakhong today.

Informing this, PIB (Defence Wing) in a statement said that during the tenure of Maj Gen Handa, a large number of successful counter-insurgency operations were conducted, the most significant being Operation Loktak Vijay against the Cobra Task Force of the proscribed PREPAK.

Particularly concerned that there should be no cases of human rights violation, Handa ensured that the troops under his command displayed exemplary behaviour while conducting CI ops, said PIB.

Under a people friendly approach, Maj Gen Handa conducted a number of Military Civic Action Projects and was responsible for establishing the all expense paid DISHA Boys Hostel, in which promising children from the weaker sections of society would be given the opportunity to realise their full potential.

Speaking at the handing over charge function, Maj Gen Handa said that he would be carrying back fond memories of the people of Manipur.

The new GOC of 57 Mountain Division, is an alumni of the NDA and was commissioned into the reputed Grenadiers Regiment in 1975 .

The GOC has vast experience of handling CI Ops in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam, informed PIB.
