Imphal, September 03 2009: Troops of 36 Assam Rifles under Red Shield Division shot and injured two members of a breakaway group of the NNC and arrested five more during a routine area domination patrol today at about 11.30 am near Khunkhu village in Senapati district.

In a statement, PIB (Defence Wing) said that while the troops were on patrol duty, they were fired upon and an encounter ensued, which lasted for about 3 hours.

The arrested men and the seized arms and ammunition

During the shoot out, two militants were shot and injured while five others were captured, said the statement and added that a large number of arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

The seized arms included one SLR, two US made rifles, two revolvers, one pistol and one shot gun, added PIB.

Other items seized included two Indian army combat uniforms, one smoke grenade, badges of the rank of Lt and 2nd Lt, pain killers and medicines.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the militants belong to the Zerengling Youth Force, a break away group of NNC, said PIB and added that it was led by one S/S Lt Chamwang son of Daucom of Tamenglong district.

The S/S Lt and another S/S Sgt, identified as Nayalum were injured in the shoot out, it said.

The two injured were given first aid and after handing them over to the police, they have been evacuated to RIMS, added the statement.
