Imphal, September 20 2024:
The Speaker's Tribunal of Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday conducted the first hearing of the disqualification cases filed against five Janata Dal (United) MLAs, who defected to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The next hearing has been set four weeks later.
The hearing on Friday was with regard to the disqualification cages filed against MLAs Kh Joykisan (Thangmeiband), Ngursanglur Sanate (Tipaimukh), Md Asab Uddin (Jiribam), Thangjam Arunkumar (Wangkhei) and LM Khaute (Churachandpur).
In this regard, the petitioner's counsel advocate N Bupenda Meitei stated that the MLAs after winning the election from a party's ticket defected to another party, in violation of the Constitution.
As such, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president Hareshwar Goswami had filed a disqualification petition on October 24, 2022 with hearing for the same held for the first time on Friday contrary to the Supreme Court's ruling that any disqualification case should have been taken up within three months of filing the petition.
Nonetheless, it is appreciative that the Speaker's Tribunal took up the case even though a long time has passed, he said.
