Imphal, November 26 2017:
Saying that there is nothing to be ashamed of riding bicycle, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD) Minister Karam Shyam declared that he will ride bicycle to office for work every Thursday.
He made the declaration at the flagging off ceremony of 'Cyclothon' from Malom IOC Depot today morning.
The 'Cyclothon' was organised by 0i1 and gas companies in the State under Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in association with Petroleum Conservation Research Association with the objective of spreading the message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ride bicycle at least for a day between November
12 and 30 to save fuel.
Around 100 cyclist enthusiasts including Karam Shyam and IOC officials participated in the 'Cyclothon' that aims to propagate the importance of fuel conservation and efficient energy utilization amongst the people.
They rode bicycle from Malom till Tiddim Service Station.
Karam Shyam said that India produced only 20 percent (37.46 million metric tonnes) of the total crude oil requirement while the remaining 80 percent is imported.
Noting that cycling a day can save millions of litres of fuel, he said that the Government can consider providing special lanes for cyclists if cycling becomes popular amongst the citizens.
Since oil is non-renewable source of energy we must use alternative sources for fuel conservation, he added.
He said that it is the collective responsibility to use fuel judiciously and make fuel conservation an integral part of our lifestyle.
He also appealed to the parents and guardians to promote using bicycle amongst students and youth instead of two wheeler vehicles and cars.
He went on to say that riding cycle is a message to all the citizens about the importance of fuel conservation.
