One day consultative meeting held

A one day leaders' consultative meeting on 'Environment and land uses in Tamenglong district' was held today at Neikanlong, Imphal .
The consultative meeting organised by Nungba Kendra Citizens' Forum (NKCF) was attended by intellectuals, researchers and environmentalists from across the State, conveyed a press release issued by Chairman and secretary of NKCF.
The deliberation declared seven key points regarding environmental and land uses in Tamenglong to conserve and sustain environment for future generation .
The meeting noted the interdependence of nature and human beings and that men has the biggest responsibility to maintain balance in the ecology .
It urged the people to the district to take lead in preventing the already fragile environment from further denigration .
The meeting discussed the ill impacts of large scale deforestation, burning down of standing forests, jhum cultivation, use of chemical fertilizers, use of chemicals for fishing etc.
Construction of mega dams and oil exploration in the region which can have adverse effect on the environment and ecology must be stooped immediately, the meeting declared .
Free, prior and informed consent of the affected indigenous must be taken as recommended by UN CERD Committee on Tipaimukh dam and oil exploration in the region , it stated and added that holistic impact assessment on socio-economic, environment, culture, history, health, human rights, must be taken before any mega project such as construction of dams and oil exploration in the region .
The meeting further pointed out that both the Government or non-Government agencies must adhere to human rights based approach based on the Constitution of India, State Government legislation and also the UN declaration on the Rights of Indigenous peoples, Convention on the Elimination of all forms of racial discriminations, International Convention of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, International Convention on Civil and Political Rights etc while taking up any developmental work in the region.
