The two persons shot dead in an encounter with Thoubal district police commandos at Wangoo Sandangkhong on June 12 evening have been identified by their respective families as Ningthoujam Hemanta Singh alias Manaba (20) s/o (L) N Tomba Singh of Parigaltabi Mamang Leikai and Huidrom Brojen alias Inao (25) s/o H Ibomcha Singh of Kwasiphai Mayai Leikai, said a statement issued by SSP (Thoubal) Clay Khongsai.
Conveying details on the incident, the SSP said after the shoot-out, two pistols were recovered from the deceased persons besides rescuing an abducted Mohori namely Laishram Naoba Singh (28) s/b L Dhiren Singh of Kakwa Lilando Lampak.
On checking the antecedents, it came to light that Hemanta surrendered as a KCP member before the SP (IW) on May 5, 1996 and was later rehabilitated before being absorbed as a rifleman of 7th Manipur Rifles, Clay recounted while adding that Hemanta decamped from the MR unit on December 3, 2001 along with one SLR, three magazines containing 60 rounds of 7:62 mm, one hand-grenade.
Renegade solder joined the UNLF outfit's armed wing MPA with his Army number being 1454 of 23rd batch, the SSP further informed.
On the otherhaftd, Brojen joined PLA in September 1999 with Army No.1804 (Corporal) and was arrested four times, the police statement said.
Brojen and Hemanta formed a gang and were responsible in harassing public, threatening and intimidating contractors and mohoris for extortion in and around Wangoo, Chairel, Sugnu, Sagang etc, added the SSP.
