CSOs flay Abonmai's murder, demand visible action
Source: Chronicle News Service / NNN

Imphal, September 25 2021: Liangmai Naga Ruangdi of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland (LNRAMN) has termed the murder of Athuan Abonmai, former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland), as an "abominable act" .

Condemning the killing in the strongest terms, the Liangmai apex body demanded to know the reasons as to why the "evil perpetrators" have committed the act.

LNR said that the "son of the soil was mercilessly slaughtered like a beast in his own home soil" .

LNR then said that it was "at loss of words" to express at the "brutal" murder of Athuan Abonmai and lamented that such an act happened when the "Naga nation" is praying for peace and unity among the Na gas who are yearning for a "peaceful political settlement" .

It also said that such an "insane act" was committed in the "sadistic way".

LNR then said that it "stands as a community in solidarity with the bereaved family and prays to God to extend His peace and comfort in this time of great loss" .

Several civil society organisations including human rights groups and political parties also strongly condemned the abduction and murder of Zeliangrong Baudi advisor and former president Athuan Abonmai by unknown miscreants and also extended solidarity to the bereaved family.

In separate releases, Kangleipak Ima Lup (KIL), United All Communities' Social Up-lifters (UNACSU) Kangleipak, Kanglei Indigenous, Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS), Kangleipak Women Welfare Association (KWWA), Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meiralup (KANGLAMEI), Human Rights Defender, Manipur (HRDM), All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' and Pullers' Welfare Association (AMRDPWA), Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK), Manipur State Committee Democratic Bharatiya Samaj Party, All Zeliangrong Arts and Cultural Organisation (AZACO) Manipur, Federation of Haomee Youth Wing and All Club Organisation, Association and Meira Paibi Lup (ACOAM-Lup) condemned the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai after abducting him in the presence of security forces and also held the state police responsible for the death of leader of the Zeliangrong community.

The CSOs also stated that they are extremely shocked over the murder of Athuan Abonmai, a lover of United Zeliangrong and Manipur.

They also blamed the government for chasing the culprits after they carried out the crime when the police personnel deployed at the initial crime scene let the miscreants abduct Abonmai.

No serious efforts are being made to arrest the perpetrators, they further alleged and opined that as only suspension of police personnel will not solve the issue probe must be made to make sure if there was any lapse from the higher officials.

The state authorities must take immediate steps to ensure that justice is served and those responsible for the crime booked and given befitting punishments, rather than wait for an uprising by the people.

Even as the government of Manipur continues to claim that the ceasefire agreement signed between the NSCN (IM) and the central government does not cover Manipur, cadres of the rebel outfit have been doing as they please in the state and if the state government continues to dance to tune of the Centre in dealing with them, then many other cases as that of Athuan Abonmai will keep happening, cautioned the CSOs.
