Imphal, April 18 2009:
Official of the state agriculture department today conducted soil testing at the fields at Andro in Imphal east for setting up another model seed village for introducing the Integrated Pest Management and Integrated Nutrient Management method of cultivation to the farmers of the area.
As an initial step, a Orientation Programme on Soil Health and fertility Management was held at a community hall of the village where additional director of agriculture, L Palandro, deputy director, planning department, Shamu Kabui, associate prof, Dr A Herojit of CAU and deputy director, soil chemist, Ph Rajendro talked on the importance of preservation of the soil for longer use.
After the orientation programme, officials went to the fields of the farmers were the department is planning to set up another model seed village for rice and conducted soil testing and also demonstrated the application of organic fertilizers to the fields.
Speaking to the farmers, additional director Palandro said farmers should learn modern method of cultivation apart from trying to nourish the soil.
Deputy director, Rajendro said that the department is going to set up the model seed village in the village as a part of ongoing campaign on IPM and INM methods of cultivations to the farmers.
This is a part of expansion of the campaign which has been successfully implemented in different parts of the four valley districts.
