Source: Chronicle News Service / Sagolsem Bigyan

Imphal, April 22 2022: Total number of vehicle theft cases during the current month (April) as per information shared by owners to this daily reached 23 Friday after 11 such cases were reported on Thursday.

Though owners lodged complaints to the respective police stations regarding missing/stealing of their vehicles, not a single vehicle could be recovered till date as also arrest of vehicle lifter.

Based on complaints lodged by owners to the police stations concerned, vehicle lifting cases have increased manifold and there is no specific time for vehicle lifters as they continue to lift vehicles, regardless of whether big or small as well as during day or night.

Modus operandi of the vehicle lifters as is evident from CCTV footages is that they come either on a two-wheeler or in a car and left together after one of them steals the vehicle.

Based on the complaints, vehicle lifting incidents happened generally at educational institutions, offices, hospitals, residential houses and other areas irrespective of day or night.

This has created fear among public about existence of an organised vehicle lifting gang in the state.

In view of the increasing vehicle theft cases, Manipur police department has recently reconstituted Anti Vehicle Theft Cell led by ADGP (L/O) and started taking up stringent action to identify the gangs and recover stolen vehicles.
