Cybercrime unit in all police stations soon: CM
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, November 04 2022: Chief minister N Biren Singh has said that every police station of the state will have cybercrime unit while all the districts will have one each prosecution officer and two public prosecutors.

The chief minister disclosed this after convening a meeting on strengthening internal security with officials of the home department and police officers at the CM's secretariat, here, on Friday.

N Biren told media persons after the meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah strongly called for strengthening internal security during the 'Chintan Shivir' for home ministers of states held in Surajkund, Haryana recently.

During the Chintan Shivir, both the PM and the Union home advised states to take up necessary steps to strengthen internal security and accordingly convened the meet on Friday with home department officials and top police officers.

While informing that Saturday's meeting mainly dwelt on strengthening border security, ILP, War on Drugs and cyber security, CM Biren observed that people seem to take social media lightly and never accord seriousness on the huge negative impact it will give to the society.

Manipur being inhabited by dif ferent communities, there is possibility of creating serious issues and even loss of lives when someone spreads fake news through social media.

As such, it is very important to take up measures to tackle spread of fake news and prevent cybercrime effectively.

Accordingly, the government has decided to establish cybercrime units in all police stations of the state.

Apart from this, every district of the state will have one each prosecution officer and two public prosecutors to assist them, Biren said, adding that director prosecution wifi collectively monitor all the units.

While observing that criminals would take laws lightly if they are not convicted even after being arrested by police, the chief minister said that timely punishment of criminals as per law is very much required.

CM Biren also disclosed that a central cybercrime office will be opened in Imphal to monitor fake news spread on social media from time to time.

When a person spreads fake news on social media, FIR could be registered instantly at the inbox of the person's social media account, he added.

According to CM Biren, the government can confiscate even properties under the Foreigners Act when a foreigner is detected and SP concerned of the districts had been designated as foreigner registration officer under the Act.

Accordingly, the SP concerned will have power to detect, detain and deport any foreigner without waiting approval from the Centre, Biren said.

While disclosing further that registration of birth, death and marriage will be taken seriously from now on and anyone who does not comply with the guidelines would be deprived of government facilities, the chief minister said there was a case of a foreigner marrying multiple local women.

He also said that the present government is working towards delivering good governance to the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was right in saying that anti-nationals holding pens are more dangerous than armed anti-nationals, Biren said, adding that step in this regard has been initiated and a cell led by ADGP has been opened.

The cell will monitor CSOs and NGOs working in the state including funding and bank accounts, he added.

Responding to a query raised by media persons, CM Biren said that all the districts have their own revenue boundary including areas where MLR & LR Act is enforced.

DC Kakching had initiated steps to remove signboards inscribed as Tengnoupal district in the district and this step is being taken up to ensure that DCs concerned collect revenue from their own jurisdiction and to prevent overlapping.

He then urged civil society organisations not to make an issue out of it as there is no question of land of any district being added to another.
