UNC bandh hit normal life in Chandel

Chandel, June 17 2014:
The first day of the UNC-sponsored 48-hr total bandh in Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur affected normal life in Chandel district today.
During the bandh, the district headquarter town of Chandel looked deserted as all shopkeepers downed their shutters and private vehicles, passenger busses, Tata Sumos and auto-rickshaws stayed off the roads.
While Govt offices recorded low attendance, the State Bank of India Chandel branch and the UCO Bank Chandel remained closed.
However, educational institutions in the district functioned normally.
All shops in Chakpikarong bazaar also remained closed.
Movement of passenger carrying buses and Tata Sumos plying along Chakpikarong-Chandel via Khambathel were also suspended.

Talking to media, president of ANCACSD RD Thumdang informed of the Chiefs' support to UNC by keeping the town shut and suspending all vehicular movements during the bandh. The National Highway No.102 (Imphal- Moreh), Pallel- Chandel road, Chandel- Chakpikarong via Sugnu road was blocked and there was no movement of vehicles along these roads. Led by its President Sng Lumdil, Maha Area Chiefs Association Chandel enforced bandh at DC Lamkhai thereby blocking the road.
Bandh volunteers also blocked the road at Liwa Changning and Thamlapokpi village.
Advisor of Western Valley Area Chiefs' Association BD James, while speaking to media, reiterated Association's solidarity and support to United Naga Council-sponsored bandh.
CNPO President Ws Kanral Anal drew the attention of the government to fulfil the demand of Alternative Arrangement which has been raised by the UNC.
Asserting that the UNC demand is genuine, he assured support and solidarity to UNC in taking the cause of the Nagas forward.
He informed media persons that the Bandh will be intensified and appealed to the public for cooperation.
