MSAD accuses police officer of manhandling its volunteers

MSAD (Manipur Students' Association Delhi) on Tuesday accused an officer in the Manipur police of manhandling three volunteers including its vice president after the vehicle they were travelling in overtook the officer's vehicle on Yairipok Tulihal Kaina road.
The 'Imphal East police' officer in plain clothes was in the passenger seat of the vehicle driven by a woman and a Gypsy with security personnel was leading them when the MSAD executives repeatedly honked in bid to overtake the vehicles, said a statement of MSAD yesterday.
The vehicles didn't give them a chance to overtake them for about 1 km and when they finally overtook they were stopped by the security personnel and 'abused', alleged MSAD.
The officer then came out of his vehicle and 'manhandled' MSAD vice-president, repeatedly shouting 'slangs', despite apologies from the three who were trying to escape from the situation, it said.
The officer humiliated and even threatened to 'shoot' them saying - 'kaap thoklaga sallaga taagera?'.
The three were not given a chance to clarify the matter.
Finally, after repeated apologies, the officer and the security personnel allowed them to leave, said MSAD.
"MSAD condemns it in the highest capacity.
The matter comes out in the limelight as the victims are strong enough to raise their voices.
This is not an exceptional and rare case in Manipur," said MSAD.
This non-ethical practice of ego-play by police personnel using their positions is a clear manifestation of State giving 'excessive power' to the police force.
It is one of the main reasons hampering the police-public relationship.
Such actions of the police increase the existing trust deficiency, it added.
Accusing the police officer of misusing his power and position to intimidate and threaten the three, MSAD sought the attention of the authorities concerned to initiate a departmental enquiry into the incident.
Seeking an apology from the officer, MSAD said that it is standing solid against VIP culture in the State.
