Residents of Pukhao Laipham under Lamlai police station of Imphal east district today staged a sit-in protest against firing of guns at a house of the village demanding a gun or Rs five lakh reportedly by a group of KCP under project officer major M Nongthang.
The sit-in protest by womenfolk started from 10.30 am today at Pukhao Laipham Khunou ground and went on till late afternoon.
It was against the firing of guns to the house of one Okram Joychand (37) son of O Ibohal of the locality pressing him to pay money amounting to Rs five lakh or a gun to them on May 6 last.
Womenfolk participating in the sit-in protest said that the demand was put by some unknown persons identified themselves to be activists working under project officer, M Nongthang of the KCP.
According to the womenfolk participating in the sit-in protest, the said person Joychand is no land of his own for cultivation and now working as Aircel and Airtel re-charge retailer after leaving his former business dealing with chicken feed.
When the unknown came to the house on April 30 with the huge monetary demand, he did not pay it as he has no means to afford it.
But they come again on the night of May 6 and fired guns to his house alleging that he did not pay the amount.
They also threatened to ensure the payment of the amount or if not able to pay it he should give a gun saying that if not, they have been ordered to hurl bomb at his house by their seniors.
With no means to afford the demand, the sit-in protest has been staged, said the womenfolk appealing the concerns not to demand unbearable monetary demand to the people.
