'Demand of mushroom in market increased'

There is no doubt in saying that financial status of villagers residing nearby forests should be enhanced as they have the potential to bring in growth and development in the State, Th Mohendra Pratap, Conservator of Forest, Forest Department, Government of Manipur, has observed.
He was speaking at the concluding function of a two-day training programme on Mushroom Cultivation organized by Lamdeng Makha, Mayai and Awang Leikai Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) in collaboration with ICAR under the aegis of Forest Development Agency (FDA), Central Forest Division at Lamdeng, Imphal West on Friday.
Mohendra Pratap maintained that units of JFMC under Forest Development Agency have been organizing training programmes for villagers residing nearby forests from time to time with the objective of uplifting their financial condition.
Conceding that experts from ICAR are teaching trainees on how to cultivate mushroom which has vast potential to earn money, the Conservator of Forest said that the demand of mushroom in the market has been increased considerably.
Apart from organizing training programmes, JFMC also help in forming self help groups with the sole aim to facilitate livelihood of unemployment people, he added.
Stating that cutting of trees in forests by villagers could be stopped if their financial status is improved, he noted that the rate of cutting down of trees should be reduced to help preservation of forests.
Ng Sanatombi, horticulture expert from KVK Imphal West and VK Vinod, DFO of Central Forest Division were also present at the occasion as resource persons.
