A joint meeting attended by representatives of a JAC and Gunpi Area Kuki Chiefs' Association (GAKCA) of Sugnu held yesterday has arrived at an understanding with regard to the thrashing of Khaidem Biramani Singh (57) of Sugnu Ward No 8 by some cadres of the UKLF on May 7 night.
Moreover, the armed outfit stating that the incident that took place at Sugnu Zouveng at around 10 pm was due to misunderstanding also tendered letter of apology addressed to chairman of 'JAC against the brutal assault of Kh Biramani Singh', Commandant 21 Assam Rifles and GAKCA chairman.
The letter of Apology issued by 'PRO-Unit III' of the UKLF namely John Kuki clarified that the incident was not at all pre-planned and on behalf of Khulmigam sought pardon for the misunderstanding caused by 'my forces'.
The joint meeting, meanwhile, agreed that GAKCA would take the initiative to ensure financial assistance is provided to Biramani's family for treatment expenditure and in case the injured person is physically disabled adequate compensation should be extended.
It was also decided that in case, the 57 year old succumbs family members should not be left in the lurch and that authorities concerned would be apprised to check free movement of armed UKLF cadres in public places and residential areas of Sugnu.
The joint session also appealed to all concerned to exercise restraint so that Sugnu remains in peace.
A statement recounting the incident said, Biramani along with his two sons and a younger brother, was returning home from Sugnu CHC where his daughter in-law was admitted for delivery.
At around 9 pm when they reached a bridge near Sugnu Zou Veng some armed UKLF cadres began to abuse and beat them up.
While the three younger persons fled away Biramani was rounded up following by more thrashing and slashing with sharp weapons, the statement maintained while adding that the elderly man was found with serious injuries near Sugnu Tribal village when the locals searched for him.
Biramani is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital, it informed.
Sugnu Post Commander of the 21 Assam Rifles reportedly attended the meeting as a witness.
