Imphal, May 18 2024:
Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) acting chairman N Nongyai has said that the internal sovereignty enjoyed by Manipur for thousands of year was lost after merging into India, and there would have been no ethnic conflict or problems if the internal sovereignty persists still.
Addressing gathering at the Kathokkhraba Singgi Numit' observance organised by Organising Committee, Kathokkhraba Singgi Numit at Nongpok Sanjenbam on Saturday, Nongyai said Manipur was once a powerful kingdom in South East Asia.
After Manipur became a part of India, the legacy of the divide and rule policy of the British was adopted by the Government of India thereby causing many problems including ethnic divide.
All these issues and problems could be brought to an end if internal sovereignty still persists, with constitutional protection.
Responding to a query raised by media persons at the sideline of the observance function, Nongyai said that the peace accord that Pambei-led UNLF signed with the Government of India will resume after the formation of new government at the Centre and peace talks will not be at the level of bureaucracy.
He said that three arrested leaders of the party will be at the hands of NIA for six months and attempt will be made to release them on bail after the period, or else will pressurise government to secure their release.
The party will even approach the Supreme Court if the arrested leaders are not released, he said.
Regarding the recent gunfight along Manipur-Myanmar border, Nongyai clarified that a group of the party's cadres had gun-fight with PDF while returning to Manipur from Myanmar.
However, the group returned through a different route after communicating with Manipur police and Assam Rifles guarding the international border, he added.
The observance function was also attended by Taragi Cheisu president Khaidem Mani, Taragi Cheisu vice-president Potsangbam Sonamani, Pambei-led UNLF general secretary Ch Thanil, finance secretary I Tonsana, UMO president N Sorojini Devi and FOCS president
Th Manihar.
