Imphal, October 08 2024:
People belonging to different communities other than the Kuki have once again started leaving Moreh after Kuki organisations in the border town imposed restrictions on non-Kuki people entering Kuki villages.
According to some persons who recently left Moreh, they have not been able to carry out trade activities due to closure of the Indo-Myanmar border.
Adding to the sufferings, Kuki organisations recently imposed restrictions on people of other communities from entering Kuki settlements including Mangkang village (former Naga village), which has been occupied by Kukis after ousting Naga residents and renamed as Haolenphai.
As a result, they could not make a living by staying there and they gradually started leaving the border town.
The Indo-Myanmar border remained close since March 2020 on account of Covid-19 and civil war in Myanmar from 2021 .
The closure severely affected trade activities in the town, which mainly rely on cross border trade.
Despite the inconveniences, people used to manage their trade activities until the communal clash broke out on May 3 last year.
The crisis had cut off customers from the valley areas and trade activities came to a standstill since then.
There have been several instances of Moreh residents leaving the border town in search of livelihood.
Most of them left the border town on the pretext of medical treatment and education for their children.
Given the situation, many are worried if people of other communities would be able to return to Moreh even if the crisis is resolved.
Displaced people of Moreh are drawing attention of the government to take up necessary measures to restore peace, so that people could return to the border town and resume trade activities while upholding its identity of a mini cosmopolitan town.
