Ukhrul meet deliberates violence against women

Members of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), lawyers, activists and law enforcement agencies on Thursday deliberated on the rights of women and domestic violence in Ukhrul.
MSCW chairperson Dr..LIbetombi Devi, in her welcome address at Ngashan Inn conference hall in Ukhrul, said there has been increasing cases of domestic violence in the state.
"It's hope that domestic violence would reduce with the intervention programme undertaken from various quarters.
However, there's a wave of rising violence," she rued.
Dr.Ibetombi felt the need for concerted approach to tackle the problem and called upon different sections of society to fight violence against women.
In order to raise the level of awareness on the certain rights of women, she added that "an intensive awareness among all sections of society is necessary." To achieve the desired target of reducing violence against women, MSCW chairperson urged upon all the citizens to join hands together and address the problem from the grassroot level.
She also noted that substance and alcoholic abuse has spoilt the youths and relatively the womenfolk.
Among others who participated in the daylong meet held under the topical "Two Days Legal Awareness Programme" comprise MSCW members June Rose Vaiphei and H.Piteswori Devi, MSCW legal advisor S.Meghachandra, an Imphal-based College of Social Work director S.S.Sharma, Ukhrul ICDS-Cell DPO AW Ringshangphi, CWC Ukhrul member Ringphami A Shimray and Ukhrul police OC LL Tezii.
In spite of the programme intended on creating awareness among the public, there was only a handful of participants mostly departmental staff and few government officials while reducing it to mere formality.
Today's meet was jointly organized by MSCW and College of Social Work, Manipur, and sponsored by National Commission for Women.
