Imphal, August 26 2009: Five girl students from different parts of Manipur have begun studying four-year BSc Nursing course at the Army Institute of Nursing in Guwahati from August 10 .

The five students are sponsored by the Red Shield Division under the guidance of GOC 57 Mtn Div, Maj Gen Shakti Gurung, VSM.

A press release from the PIB (DW) stated that in continuation to its commitment towards the upliftment of the society, the RED SHIELD DIVISION has undertaken a noble endeavour of sponsoring the training of five educated girls from remote areas of the state of Manipur, for four year BSc Nursing Degree course at Army Institute of Nursing Guwahati, one of the premier nursing institutes in the country.

The press release further informed that initially 23 girls, meeting the education criterion, were selected by 57 Mtn Div for appearing in the AIN, Guwahati entrance examination on 25 Apr 09.Subsequently, five of these candidates cleared the entrance examination and are now being sponsored by the Division under its Military Civic Action programme for the four year nursing course.

The press release narrated that Maj Gen Shakti Gurung, VSM, GOC 57 Mtn Division had conceptualised the vision of reinforcing the health infrastructure in the state with trained manpower and integrating them as a bridge between rural areas and hospitals.

His vision encompasses creating sustainable sources of income, which imbibe a sense of self esteem amongst the educated youth in Manipur and allows them to serve humanity with dedication, devotion and diligence.

57 Mtn Div is also running a Health Angels Program, where 15 educated girls from remote villages are being trained in Basic First Aid.

The selected five girls have enrolled successfully in the academic session for the year 2009-10, which commenced from 10th of Aug 2009 at AIN Guwahati.

The Red Shield Division will be incurring an expenditure of approx Rs 1.5 lakhs per annum per candidate for training, lodging, travelling, mess and clothing.

A total of Rs 30 lakhs will be spent by the Division for training of these five girls as qualified nurses.
