SIT formed, bodies remain unclaimed

Imphal, January 11 2022: Imphal West district superintendent of police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday to investigate into the killing of two persons including a police in election related violence at Samurou village under Wangoi assembly constituency on Sunday night.

According to an order issued by SP Ksh Shivakanta Singh, the team will be headed by additional SP of Imphal West Amit Singh and Mayang Imphal SDPO Kh Farook Ali as investigating officer (IO) while Wangoi police station's ofncer-in-charge S Nabajiban Ningthouja and sub-inspector P Bishorjit Singh will assist the 10 in the investigation of the case.

It also directed the OC and IO of the case to handover the case record to Kh Farook Ali for further investigation and further instructed the probe team to submit the progress of the investigation to IW SP on a daily basis.

Mention may be made here that on Sunday night two men who were shot at at Samurou Awang Leikai under Wangoi PS by unidentified gunmen succumbed to injuries at different hospitals.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem examinations of the two victims namely Abujam John and Abujam Sashikanta were conducted at RIMS on Tuesday.

However, family members of deceased have refused to claim the bodies.

Speaking in this regard, JAC convenor Y Rabi reiterated that they will not take the bodies of John and Sashikanta from RIMS morgue despite completion of the post-mortem.

JAC along with the people will launch intense protest if authorities concerned could not reveal facts about the incident within 48 hours, he cautioned.

The JAC also declared that a total shutdown will be imposed from 5am to 6pm indefinitely along Mayai Lambi.

However, education, religious matters, health and other essential services would be exempted from the purview of the shutdown.

While urging the clubs and organisations in the state, particularly those located along Mayai Lambi, to support the shutdown by staging sit-in demonstration and blocking the road, the JAC cautioned of launching more intense protests if the government fails to give positive response to their demand within 10 am of Wednesday.

Condemning the killings, sit-in protests were staged by local people in different parts including Naorem Chaprou, Yumnam Huidrom Khwai Leirak, Paobitek, Wangoi Thiyam, Thongkhong Luxmi Bazar, Yumnam Huidrom Manung, Meijrao, Wangoi Thoudam Leikai, Yumnam Huidrom and Wangoi Bazar on Tuesday.

The protestors the blocked roads with pipes and tree trunks, burnt tyres and squatted on the road in several areas along Mayai Lambi.

They also raised slogans condemning the killings of John and Sashikanta, demanding arrest of the culprits and punishing them.

The JAC formed against the killing also submitted a memorandum to the CM making it clear that the lifeless bodies will not be claimed until the facts about the killing are made known and further demanded to bring out the facts of the incident within 48 hours.
