Imphal, January 25 2019:
The Manipur State Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) expressed its deep anguish over the growing sense of disquiet and agitation of the people across the North East, particularly Manipur, over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha recently.
The polit bureau of the CPI (M) has called a Nationwide protest on February 4 against the Bill, said a statement of secretary CPI (M) Ksh Santa today.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill infringes on the basic premise of the Constitution of common citizenship regardless of caste, creed, gender, ethnicity and culture.
The idea of unity in diversity stands threatened with the proposal (CAB) which exclusively recognizes religious identity as the basis for citizenship, said the CPI (M).
North East is one of those regions of the country which has a very rich diversity across the people and sensitivities based on cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic pluralism.
There is also a sense of insecurity over the sustenance of the distinct identities of the communities residing in the region.
Relative peace had come to prevail in this region in the recent times.
But, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is disrupting stability, said the party.
"The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) has urged the Central Government not to proceed further with the proposal and withdraw the Bill," said the statement.
Manipur State Committee CPI (M) will be joining the Nationwide protest on February 4 by organising sit-in in Imphal, said the party and appealed all parties, groups and citizens to join the protest.
