Imphal, August 05, 2010:
Out of the two Thoubal police commandos who suffered grievous injuries during a clash with locals of Lilong Ushoipokpi some days back, one succumbed at Shija Hospital today.
A police source confirmed that commando personnel Leimapokpam Somendro of Thoubal Athokpam passed away this afternoon at the private medical centre, where he was undergoing treatment following the clash on August 3 night.
Somendro was a 3rd IRB havildar attached to Thoubal police commando unit.
Somendro, along with rifleman Robindro Singh of Moirang Khunou was admitted to Shija Hospital.
Three of their colleagues had managed to escape the public thrashing.
The mortal remains of Somendro has been handed over to family members after completion of post mortem at JNIMS hospital today.
Ushoipokpi locals claimed that attempts by the Thoubal police commando team to forcibly extort money from an individual had ignited the clash.
In addition to constituting a JAC, Ushoipokpi locals are demanding termination of service of the commando personnel involved in the incident and returning the money allegedly taken away by the commando team.
Contrary to the allegations, police (source) contended that the commando team was assaulted by the locals when they ventured into Ushoipokpi based on a 'specific tip off'.
Lilong police have registered a case on the incident and an investigation already launched, a police source added.
