Kangpokpi, May 21 2017:
Work of filling up the numerous potholes that dot the Trans Asian Highway-1 (Imphal-Dimapur line) has started in right earnest.
Some of the potholes are big enough to even keel over loaded heavy trucks and workers are working earnestly to fill them up and make the journey across this lifeline of the State safer and more comfortable for the travellers.
For taking up the much needed pothole filling work, Kangpokpi district has extended its gratitude to the BJP led Government.
However, Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi district has expressed its reservation over the manner in which the work has been taken up, stating "The filling up of the potholes exercise has been found wanting in many cases, especially from Motbung to Kangpokpi district headquarters." The observation of the Kuki Inpi came after it inspected the mending activities taken up along the said stretch of the highway today.
Speaking to media persons Lamminlun Singsit general-sectary, Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi district said that while the initiative taken up is appreciable, the implementing part is not upto the mark as "the mending exercise in many cases is sub-standard" .
He continued that the stone chips used for filling the potholes should be below 40mm but "we came across many stone chips larger than 60mm which will the roller will find hard to break.
Filling up the potholes with such big stone chips will not work as they simply roll out once the roller go over them-to firm them up." When the filled up potholes are black topped in this manner then it will not last long at all, he observed.
The Kuki Inpi therefore appealed to the implementing agency to maintain quality and asked the Minister' concerned to issue strict directive to maintain quality in the; work done.
Singsit further said that they will inspect the works again and if the substandard quality is continued then the Kuki Inpi will be compelled to stop the work.
The Kangpokpi Youth Union also endorsed the stand of: the Kuki Inpi and appealed to the authority concerned to avoid' substandard work, which otherwise is the common practice'' along the Highway.
