New drug smuggling route comes to light

Kakching, April 19 2013 : With all the earlier known routes for smuggling drugs sealed by the police commandos, drug traffickers have conveniently found new transit routes through the thick jungles to reach Myanmar.

Uncovering one of the new routes for drug trafficking in the border area, personnel of 8th Manipur Rifles Thursday night arrested four persons from Saivom area in Chandel district along with a huge consignment of Pseudoephedrine powder tablets.

Acting on a hint, a team of 8th Manipur Rifles posted at Saivom village conducted a raid around 9 pm last night and managed to round up two persons who are actively involved in smuggling drugs from Tuisuamlang towards Tamenglong through Saivom.

From the disclosure of the two arrested persons identified as Jamlet Haokip (50) son of late Doujang and Jangthong Haokip (25) son of Thangkhojang, both from Saivom village, the MR team further raided the house of one Saikhulen Mate (28) of Tengnoupal and seized a huge quantity of pseudoephedrine powder culled from capsules and stored in four big travel bags.

There were in all 28 polythene bags filled with pseudoephedrine powder inside the four travel bags.

Another person identified as Ngamkhai Touthang (40) son of late Limhao of Tuisomjang, Tengnoupal village, who was also involved in smuggling the drugs was also subsequently arrested from the disclosure of the earlier arrested trio.

The seized drugs were displayed before media at the post of 8th Manipur Rifles at Saivom village today.

Later, a team of Thoubal Police Commandos posted at Pallel along with Tengnoupal Police took the arrested smugglers and the seized drugs into their custody and took them to Commando Complex at Pallel for further investigation.

Owner(s) of the drugs is/are yet to be ascertained.

It may be noted here that after Imphal-Moreh Road (NH-2) which used to be the main transit route for drug trafficking into Myanmar and Thoubal Police Commandos have seized many consignments of drugs on numerous occasions.

Even an Army PRO was arrested along with large quantity of drugs recently.

Consequently, security along the route has been alerted.

This has compelled the drug smugglers to hunt for new routes through which they can swiftly smuggle the drugs into Myanmar.

The mule-track from Tuisomlang to Tengnoupal via Saivom through thick jungles of border area to reach Myanmar has become newest hot route for smuggling drugs.
