Protestors clash with police in Khurai

Imphal, March 16 2011:
Two police personnel were detained for a brief period by women protestors as tension remained unabated after the death of a 17-year boy at Khurai three days ago.
Yendrembam Naoba @ Bidyananda (17) son of Y Bankimchandra of Kongpal Laishram Leikai was found dead in a pond near YOSC ground at Khurai Chairenthong in the morning of March 14 .
Locals of Kongpal Laishram Leikai alleged that he was killed by unknown persons wielding sharp weapons and then thrown in the pond.
Demanding justice, locals have been protesting since the afternoon of March 14.They are targeting the shop where Naoba was caught allegedly for stealing goods on the night before his death.
Today, a large number of womenfolk attempted to storm the shop.
However, police prevented them by firing tear gas shells and using other mob dispersal devices.
Despite the strong action of the police, the womenfolk continued to target the shop and they again marched towards the shop around 2.30 pm.
When the police started firing tear gas shells, the protestors retaliated with stone pelting.
Two police personnel chasing protestors near a paddy field were overpowered by a crowd who detained them for some time.
They were later released unharmed.
The confrontation continued till additional police force from Porompat PS arrived.
Imphal east additional SP, SDPO and OC also arrived at
the spot.
In the police action, five women protestors including the mother and sister of the deceased Naoba fainted at the spot.
They were rushed to JNIMS hospital.
Meanwhile, five Meira Paibi Lups, Kongpal Laishram Leikai Meira Paibi, Khurai Sajor Leikai Meira Paibi, Chairenthong Meira Paibi, Heikrumakhong Meira Paibi and Thongam Leikai Meira Paibi, in a joint press statement vowed that they will continue to protest until the culprits in the case are booked and justice is delivered to the victim's family.
