Imphal, September 20 2024:
Unidentified armed persons abducted Sarangthem Somorendro, the private secretary of CAF&PD minister L Susindro from near Babu Hotel in Khurai Sajor Leikai under Porompat police station around 8 am Friday.
The abduction led to formation of a JAC comprising members of Khurai Chaithabi Leirak Meira Paibi and Khurai Chaithabi Leirak Development Club and demand for the safe release of Somorendro within 24 hours, failing which intense agitations would be launched.
As per reports, Somorendro was out with his wife and children, shopping for some items for Tarpon.
On receiving news of the abduction, police launched search operation in various suspected locations.
According to Somorendro's wife Sarangthem Deepali, she along with her husband and children left for the market to buy some items for Tarpon at around 7.20am Friday.
Upon arriving near Babu Hotel in Khurai Sajor Leikai, unidentified persons in Gypsy, Maruti Swift and some two-wheelers waylaid their vehicle.
The unidentified persons alighted from their vehicles and then pointed their guns at her husband, in addition to slapping and beating him up.
The persons also threatened her with the guns.
Recounting that there has been no "disagreements" with any group or individuals in the past few days, Deepali recalled the incident of a bomb attack at their residence in Khurai Chaithabi Leirak some two-three months back.
She then said that her husband is unwell and currently undergoing treatment and appealed for his safe release.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest was staged at the entrance of Khurai Chaithabi Leirak against the abduction of Somorendro.
The newly formed JAC further demanded Somorendro's release within 24 hours failing which intense agitations would be launched.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, Meira Paibi member Takhelmayum Bimola informed that Somorendro has been working for the development of the locality as the general secretary of Khurai Chaithabi Leirak.
She then condemned Somorendro's assault and abduction in broad daylight at gun point right in front of his wife and young kids.
She continued that even if Somorendro had made any mistakes, the same can be resolved peacefully through the JAC formed in connection with the abduction.
Other than that, it is absolutely abhorrent to think one can fulfil his/her wishes by abducting an innocent civilian, she remarked.
