In an astonishing feat, locals of Purum Chumbang village, Chandel district, which is located near Komlathabi village and is populated by the Chothe tribe, have created a wild life sanctuary in the hope of preserving and protecting the plants and animals of the forest.
The village chief MK Ismael told The Sangai Express that the villagers tookup the task of creating the wild life sanctuary with the aim of preserving the gradually disappearing plant and animal population of the forest as well as to conserve the ecosystem.
After Forest Department officials informed about the ill effects of deforestation, the villagers began work on the wild life sanctuary from 2016.Hunting is strictly prohibited in the 400 hectares sanctuary, the chief added.
Pointing out that no one cuts down the trees inside the wildlife sanctuary any more, Ismael said that any individual found hunting animals or felling trees inside the area of the wildlife sanctuary, is liable to a fine of Rs 5000.The village chief further informed that the wild life sanctuary is now home to numerous animals including foxes, wild boars, deers and wild cats.
Fire linings are even implemented in the wild life sanctuary to protect it from forest fire, the chief added.
