Bid to topple Govt will be futile: BJP MLA

Imphal, June 23 2020: NPP's attempt to topple the BJP-led Government in collaboration with Congress party in the midst of the extreme misery bred by the COVID-19 pandemic is rather unfortunate but this attempt will prove futile, asserted BJP MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen.

Speaking to media persons at his residence located at Salam, Imphal West this afternoon, S Rajen said that the Biren-led Government has been making all efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given the gravity of the situation, all legislators should keep aside all differences and must work together to combat the pandemic but NPP backed away from this responsibility and forged alliance with Congress.

The new political manoeuvre of NPP is driven by personal interests and it reflects their total indifference to the suffering of the people, Rajen said.

Since the BJP-led coalition Government was formed on March 15, 2017, all the four NPP MLAs were serving as Cabinet Ministers.

But it has been quite a long time since NPP started flouting the basic principles of being a coalition partner.

It was the NPP MLAs which incited some BJP MLAs to revolt against the incumbent leadership, Rajen said.

After suddenly withdrawing their support to the coalition Government, NPP extended its support to Congress party and started plotting to topple the coalition Government, he said.

"I once asked NPP MLAs to leave the coalition after the then Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar chided Chief Minister N Biren as if the latter was a lunatic", said the BJP MLA.

Claiming that BJP is a political party which has its own ideology and discipline, Rajen maintained that he would not remain silent when anyone uses offensive and unparliamentary language against Chief Minister N Biren who is also the leader of BJP legislators.

"I was only asking the NPP MLAs to quit the coalition instead of working under N Biren whom they described as almost insane", he continued.

The joint efforts of NPP and Congress will never be successful as testified by the victory of BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha election held recently, Rajen asserted.

In addition, there are some other legislators who support the coalition Government even though they cannot openly declare their support, he claimed.

He also dismissed the several allegations made by NPP MLA L Jayantakumar against Chief Minister Biren.

NPP has the right to choose their own path but they should not hurl unfounded allegations against others by overlooking their own mistakes and drawbacks.

There is no truth in Jayantakumar's allegation that N Biren interfered in the works of Ministers and he (Biren) was running the Government by himself with the help of a few hand-picked bureaucrat officers, Rajen contended.

As Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jayantakumar should have acted as the vanguard in the battle against COVID-19 but there was an issue of supplying sub-standard face masks, PPE and other materials to healthcare workers, he said.

The issue is being investigated by the Vigilance Department, he added.
