Efforts on to fill in vacant teachers' posts, says Education Minister

Imphal, November 05 2022: The Government is taking up efforts to recruit teachers to fill vacancies in schools and colleges, said Education Minister Th Basantakumar today.

He was interacting with students of Imphal College during the annual 'Social Freshers' Meet' of the college.

Th Basantakumar, who attended the programme as chief guest, said there are about 7,000 vacancies at present.

Answering students' queries, he said, from 2012 onwards, about 600 school teachers retire every year.

The condition is same for colleges.

With such numbers of teachers retiring every year and due to lack of fresh recruitments, there are about 7,000 vacancies that need to be filled.

This is the reason why students at present are facing immense problems academically, he said.

Mentioning protests students had launched recently against transfer and posting of teachers, the Minister acknowledged that transferring and posting of teachers during midterm is not a healthy practice even if it is meant to fill vacancies at a school or college.

Such practice causes troubles and inconveniences the students as their teacher is abruptly transferred to another school or college midterm, he said.

While there are some schools which have adequate teachers, he said, there are many which do not have adequate numbers of teachers.

There are also some Primary Schools which have students but no teachers.

This is very unfortunate, he said.

Acknowledging the problems schools and colleges are facing due to shortage of teachers, he said the Government is taking up all efforts to hold recruitments and fill the vacancies as soon as possible.

Once the vacancies are filled, the Government schools and colleges in the State would improve significantly, he said.

To a query posed by a student, Basantakumar said, "As human beings, we should never stop trying even when we fail.

I did not succeed the first time I faced election.

But I refused to surrender and contested again to win the next election" .

About Imphal College, he said, the college is best situated on the outskirt of the main city area.

He said that had been wanting to visit and inspect the college for quite some time.

Stating he has the opportunity to do the same as he attends the Social Freshers' Meet, Basantakumar said that he would continue to visit the college and try to improve its infrastructure and provide the needful.
