Two held in failed bid to burgle ATM booth

Two persons who tried to steal money by tampering/breaking an ATM (SBI) booth at Andro Parking near Bheigo Saw Mill have been arrested by Imphal East district police today.
The arrested persons were paraded and the equipment used in committing the crime was displayed before media persons at Imphal East SP office complex.
Briefing media persons at the conference hall of SP Imphal East this after, SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam maintained that the two youths involved in the ATM break-in were arrested within 12 hours.

The SP stated that a suo moto case was registered after a police patrolling team reportedly informed that a shutter of an ATM booth located near Bheigo Saw Mill, Andro Parking Imphal East was found open and the ATM inside too was damaged/vandalized.
Soon after the information was received a strong team of Imphal East district Police under his supervision rushed to the spot and inspected the site, he said and continued that one LPG Gas cylinder, one oxygen gas cylinder and cutting torch was found inside the ATM booth.
On checking the CCTV footages of cameras installed near and at the ATM booth, it was found that the robbery attempt was made in between 12.50 am and 1.22 am and the bid of the robbers was foiled by the frequent police patrolling, the SP remarked adding that robbers had only to flee the booth leaving behind the equipment, he said.
The General Manager SBI (RBO) who also visited the spot, has confirmed that the ATM machine contained an amount of Rs 16,90,000 and none of the amount was stolen from the ATM booth, he added.
Acting swiftly on the basis of their information and clues gathered from the spot, the district police team managed to arrest the accused identified as Asem Rojit (29) of Palace Compound and Seram Bikram (20) of Pukhao Naharup, presently staying at a rented house in Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai, the SP said adding that one Maruti Van used in commission of the crime was also seized.
During preliminary interrogation it was revealed that accused Asem Rojit is a school van driver and Seram Bikram is daily wage labourer and both have admitted to the break in attempt, said the SP who further asserted that a regular FIR case has been registered against the arrested persons at Porompat Police station for further investigation and to take up necessary legal action against them.
According to sources, the arrested persons acquainted each other via social networking site recently and made up the plan to loot the ATM booth.
Meanwhile, some from the bank staff who were also present at Imphal East SP complex maintained that the incident was the third of its kind in recent days.
The first incident was reported on July 6 at the SBI ATM booth located at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai while the other occurred on June 26 at a UBI ATM booth located at Sagolband Thangapat Mapal, they said.
