Imphal, July 09 2012:
Putting up banners and placards, students, teachers as well as womenfolk staged sit-in-demonstrations at different locations of Imphal East and West districts in pursuit of the ever-growing demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit System in Manipur while the Zeliangrong Students' Union Barak Valley (ZSUBV) has pledged support to the campaign.
The demand for ILP, which notably gained momentum after the recent formation of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System, comprising of several students bodies and civil society organisations, was sustained by students and teachers at a number of places in Imphal East and West districts today.
On the otherhand, our Jiribam correspondent quoted ZSUBV secretary Stephen Panmei as saying that a meeting of the Union held today has resolved to support the ongoing demand for implementation of ILP system in Manipur.
Citing the case of Tripura State, where outsiders have far outnumbered the indigenous populace, Stephen strongly desired that the Government of Manipur take instant action for an effective mechanism to check influx of outsiders into the State.
Meanwhile, participants in today's daylong agitation included students/teachers of Royal Academy of science (Wangkhei), Pioneer Academy (Palace Compound), CC Higher Secondary School (Sanjenthong), Prim Rose English School (Khabeisoi), Leishemba Maheikol (Kangla Chingarel), Success School (Waiton Lamkhai), P Namjoklung High School (Sawombung) and Young Pioneer English School (Khurai).
The protest held along the Tiddim Line included students as well as teachers of Regular School (Kwakeithel), Zenith Academy, HRD (Ghari), Herbert School, MEM Higher Secondary School (Sangaiprou) and Millennium Academy.
Placards/banners asking the state legislators to contribute their mite in saving the future generation of Manipur, protect the indigenous people and prove their commitment to the people by enacting a law on ILP were displayed at the demonstration sites.
Similar protests were also staged at Kwakeithel and Khoyathong areas, while on Mayai Lambi protests were staged at Heirangoithong, Langthabal Phura makhong, Wangoi Bazar and Mayang Imphal Bazar under the aegis of All Mayai Lambi Joint Transport Committee.
speaking to mediapersons at Kwakeithel, Nupi Khut secretary Th Kombirei lamented alleged lack of initiative by the Ministers and MLAs of Manipur to protect the indigenous people from becoming a marginalised community of the society.
Pointing out that unaccounted number of Manipuris had died due to acts of violence and substance abuse, she conveyed strong wish for an effective mechanism to check unrestrained entry of migrant workers and outsiders into Manipur.
Kombirei also pledged unstinted support of Nupi Khut to any movement for implementation of ILP system in the State.
