Imphal East, West districts see spike in dengue cases

One person died of dengue in Imphal West district while the number of infected persons in the district and neighbouring Imphal East district increased in the two months - August and September.
According to State Malaria officer Dr Priyokumar, a total of 448 dengue cases have been detected in the state from January, 2024 till date with Imphal West district recording highest number of infected persons at 259 followed by Imphal East district with 117 cases.
In the same period, Thoubal district recorded 27 cases followed by Bishnupur district with 21 cases, Kakching district eight cases, Chandel and Kangpokpi districts four each, Ukhrul district three, two cases in Noney district and one each case in Senapati, Tamenglong and Kamjong districts.
A total of 44 cases were detected in Imphal East in August and 52 cases in September while Imphal West recorded 85 cases in the month of August and 140 cases in September.
One person from Imphal West district succumbed to vector-borne disease on Thursday, Dr Priyokumar said.
While confirming that one person among 49 infected in Keishamthong area died of the disease on Thursday, the malaria officer said total of 34 cases were detected in Thangmeiband area, 16 in Mongsangei, Heirangoithong and Haobam Marak.
In Imphal East district, 30 cases were detected in areas under Yaiskul assembly constituency, eight cases in Khurai area and seven cases in Palace compound and Porompat areas of the district.
State Malaria department has taken up measures to prevent spread of the disease but officials are facing difficulties particularly due to lack of cooperation from public, Dr Priyokumar said and appealed public not to conceal Dengue patients.
When officials of the department tried to establish contact to enquire conditions of confirmed dengue cases, family members did not pick up phone, he added.
According to Dr Priyokumar, it is wrong perception that fogging alone will contain dengue and opined that preventive measures would be futile in case the masses continue to belief in hearsays and accord importance of advice of pseudo-experts.
He also appealed to the public to follow guidelines issued by the department for controlling Dengue.
